The South is up for grabs

With the Arizona Wildcats getting business done early this weekend, beating the Colorado Buffaloes 42-34 on Friday night, that left Saturday wide open for UA fans to do as they please.

In case that didn’t involve keeping track of how the rest of the Pac-12 games went, here’s a rundown of the Week 10 action around the conference:

Arizona State 38, Utah 20

The Utah Utes had been the hottest team in the Pac-12 (other than Washington State) but they melted under the Tempe sun on Saturday afternoon. As a result, Utah (6-3, 4-3) lost its solo hold on the South Division lead.

The Arizona State Sun Devils (5-4, 3-3) jumped out to a 14-0 lead but only led by a point entering the fourth quarter. That’s when their offensive stars took over, with Manny Wilkins and N’Keal Harry hooking up for a third time in the game and then Eno Benjamin icing things with a 44-yard rushing score with 4:12 to go.

Wilkins threw for 285 yards on 19-of-24 passing with three TDs and an interception, Benjamin ran for 175 yards and two scores on 27 carries and Harry’s three TDs were part of a nine-catch, 161-yard effort.

Utah got 128 rushing yards and a TD from Zack Moss but lost quarterback Tyler Huntley to a broken collarbone. Backup Jason Shelley was just 4 of 11 for 59 yards with a pick in relief of Huntley.

Oregon 42, UCLA 21

Chip Kelly’s first game in Eugene since leaving the Oregon Ducks went about as expected, with his UCLA Bruins falling behind 21-0 early in the second quarter and never getting closer than within two scores.

Oregon (6-3, 3-3) snapped a two-game skid behind a 264-yard, two-touchdown performance from Justin Herbert, who had struggled in the past few contests. The junior connected twice with Dillon Mitchell, who had eight catches for 156 yards.

Wilton Speight threw for 147 yards and a TD while Joshua Kelley added 161 rushing yards and a score for UCLA (2-7, 2-4), which has dropped two straight after winning two in a row.

Washington 27, Stanford 23

Taylor Rapp’s interception of K.J. Costello in the end zone with one second left kept the Washington Huskies from blowing a 21-point lead at home to the Stanford Cardinal.

Washington (7-3, 4-3) got a big boost from the return of running back Myles Gaskin, who had missed the last two games with a shoulder injury. The senior ran for 148 yards and a touchdown, his 6-yard run putting the Huskies up 21-0 early in the second quarter, but after that they managed just two field goals and were outgained 424-371.

Costello was 29 of 43 for 347 yards with two touchdowns but also three interceptions. His second TD pass, to Trenton Irwin with 3:24 left, would have pulled Stanford (5-4, 3-3) with a field goal but the extra point was missed, forcing the Cardinal to throw into the end zone at the end rather than attempt a game-tying field goal.

USC 38, Oregon State 21

The USC Trojans got back to their winning ways with a season-best 509 yards in Corvallis, in doing so pulling into a tie with Arizona and Utah for first in the Pac-12 South.

USC (5-4, 4-3) ran for 332 yards against the Oregon State Beavers, with Aca’Cedric Ware going for 205 yards and three touchdowns on just 17 carries. Vavae Malaepeai added 101 on 15 carries while Stephen Carr had 49 yards and a score.

J.T. Daniels returned from a concussion to throw for 177 yards and a TD on 14-of-26 passing.

Oregon State (2-7, 1-5) wasn’t able to replicate its comeback from a week ago, when after trailing 31-3 at Colorado it rallied to win in overtime. The Beavers ran for just 31 yards, Pac-12 rushing leader Jermar Jefferson gaining 58 while Jake Luton was sacked several times but still threw for 301 yards and a TD.

Washington State 19, California 13

The Washington State Cougars avoided a major letdown—and kept alive its small College Football Playoff chances—with a last-minute touchdown to slip past the upset-minded California Golden Bears at home late Saturday night.

Gardner Minshew threw a 10-yard TD pass to Easop Winston Jr. for the game-winning score. Minshew threw for 334 yards with an interception on 35-of-51 passing but the Cougars (8-1, 5-1) overall were sluggish on offense. WSU twice had to settle for short field goals after getting into the red zone and missed another three-pointer.

Cal (5-4, 2-4) had a pass from Brandon McIlwain intercepted in the end zone with 7:34 left that would have given it a 20-13 lead. McIlwain was 3 of 7 for 52 yards while Chase Garbers threw for 127 yards and a TD.
