Arizona’s Cate Reese named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week

The McDonald’s All-American had 19 points and 16 rebounds in a win over South Carolina State

Cate Reese became Arizona women’s basketball’s first ever McDonald’s All-American when she signed with the program in 2017.

Now, she is the first Wildcat to be named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. The 6-foot-2 forward won the nomination Monday after posting 19 points and 16 rebounds in a 73-32 win over South Carolina State.

Known for her tenaciousness, Reese has started all five games this season, averaging 16.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per contest. When she grabbed 16 rebounds against SCSU, she became the first Wildcat since Davellyn White in 2013 to grab at least 16 rebounds and the first freshman to do it since Shawntinice Polk in 2003.

Reese has posted two 20-point games this season, the most of any freshman in the Pac-12. She is the seventh-highest scorer and 10th-best rebounder among all freshmen in the country.

The Cypress, Texas native is shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 42.9 percent (3-7) from 3. She is also a perfect 19 of 19 from the free-throw line.

Reese and redshirt sophomore point guard Aari McDonald have formed an excitable duo this season. McDonald, who transferred in from Washington, is averaging 26.6 points per game — tied for the best mark in the nation — and last week was Arizona’s first Pac-12 Player of the Week since 2015.

The Wildcats (4-1) return to action Tuesday when they host Incarnate Word at 6:30 p.m. MST.
