Arizona soccer falls to Tennessee in second round, despite furious comeback

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Danielle Marcano knocked in a corner kick with 55 seconds left to propel Tennessee to a 3-2 win over Arizona in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The goal halted a furious rally by the Wildcats, who scored two goals within three minutes to tie the game late in the second half. Samantha Falasco scored in the 78th minute and Kennedy Kieneker scored in the 80th minute. The Wildcats had several scoring chances after that, too.

Arizona finishes the year with a 13-6-2 record, falling in the second round for the second straight season. Tennessee will face Texas A&M in the Sweet Sixteen on Sunday.

UT’s Salera Jordan broke a scoreless tie in the 35th minute and Marcano scored her first goal of the night in the 46th minute to give the Vols a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats’ 13 wins are the third-most in program history.

Arizona is set to return all but two starters next season, losing Kieneker and goalkeeper Lainey Burdett to graduation.

This story will be updated.
