Wildcat Wrap: Arizona lands Terry Armstrong, gets mixed results vs. Oregon in three sports

From football cooking the Oregon Ducks on homecoming to non-revenue sports having another solid week, we have you covered on the week that was for Arizona Athletics.

Volleyball

• Kendra Dahlke, the team’s best player, will be out for at least two weeks with a foot injury coach Dave Rubio announced Tuesday. The senior outside hitter left in the fourth set against Utah two Sundays ago. Dahlke’s newest injury comes on the heels of a concussion she got against UCLA a few weeks ago which held her out one game.
• Former UA setter Penina Snuka will be inducted into the program’s Ring of Honor. She is second in program history in assists (5,212) and digs (1,610). Her senior year of 2016, the 5’6 Snuka was named Pac-12 Setter of the Year. It was the first time a UA player was bestowed with the honor. She also led the program to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in over a decade that year.
• UA kept the winning going with a 3-0 sweep over Oregon State on Friday. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Smoot had a career-high in kills with 17. Sophomore outside hitter Paige Whipple had a season-high 18 kills.
• However, the winning streak was snapped Sunday as the UA lost 3-1 to Oregon. Junior setter Julia Patterson recorded her 2,000th assist against the Ducks to make her the ninth player in program history to reach the number.
• UA (17-7, 6-6) sits sixth in the conference with a road trip against the Washington schools awaiting this weekend. Arizona lost both of its matches to each school at the beginning of October. A win or two would be massive for UA’s postseason aspirations.

Soccer

• Like volleyball, the UA soccer earned a split against the Oregon schools, only these games were on the road.
• Arizona scored a trio of second-half goals to beat Oregon State on Thursday. Amanda Porter scored the game-winner and Kennedy Kieneker added two insurance goals — the senior’s first two goals of the season. The Beavers are the worst team in the Pac-12 by far, so it was a game UA had to have.
• They weren’t as fortunate against Oregon, however, falling to the Ducks 1-0 in overtime. It was just Oregon’s second conference win, so it was a bad loss by Arizona, which is 11-5-2 (4-4-2 Pac-12) heading into the regular-season finale at ASU.
• Both UA and ASU have a lot on the line going into that match. Arizona might need to win to host the first round of the NCAA Tournament, while a win for ASU would likely cement their spot in the NCAA Tournament.
• Before the ‘Cats left for Oregon, we caught up with forward Brynn Moga to talk about her big week against the Washington schools, working in special education and more.

Women’s basketball

• The Wildcats’ first exhibition is Monday night against Eastern New Mexico.

Women’s swimming and diving

• Arizona won 12 of 14 events over Oregon State on Saturday to win 152-103. Junior Hannah Cox won three events and senior Katrina Konopka won two.
• The women head into the water again on Friday against UCLA. Both men and women’s teams take on USC on Saturday.

Softball

• The eight-time national champions have an extended fall ball schedule after weather postponed games last weekend. UA plays Pima College on Monday and Wednesday.

Cross country

• The UA men and women teams were in Palo Alto, California on Friday for the Pac-12 Championships. The women placed 10th while the men took eighth. Redshirt junior Carlos Villarreal and senior Addi Zerrenner placed in the top-15.
• The teams head to Sacramento next Friday for the NCAA West Regional.

Hockey

• The ‘Cats on ice split a two-game series with Oklahoma to now be tied with the Sooners for second in the Western Collegiate Hockey standings.
• UA begins a near three-month homestand on Friday.

Baseball

• The Wildcats faced Cal State Fullerton in Mesa and won..... in 22 innings.

Women’s golf

• Sophomore Yu-Sang Hou finished the LPGA Taiwan Championship at 8-over and tied for 56th, the third-lowest amateur in the field.

Football

• When everyone said they couldn’t, UA football players said we can. When everyone said they’d lose on homecoming to top-25 ranked Oregon, the ‘Cats (4-5, 3-3 Pac-12) made a statement with a 44-15 win on Saturday night. That statement being the season isn’t dead and there’s still reason to play.

• Even though reports surfaced of him in a boot before kickoff, junior quarterback Khalil Tate started after missing the UCLA game.
• Former UA defensive lineman Joe Salave’a was inducted into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Salave’a attended Arizona from 1993-1997. He will honored during the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend and the Polynesian Bowl on Jan. 18 and 19, 2019, respectively.

Men’s Basketball

• Coach Sean Miller’s squad will begin the season unranked in the AP poll. It’s the first time since the 2010-2011 season UA will start a season unranked. The ‘Cats did reach the Elite Eight that year, though. The team received 14 points to place them 37th in the country.
• Four-star wing Terry Armstrong committed to the ‘Cats on Wednesday. Armstrong, originally from Michigan, plays his high school ball at Bella Vista Prep in Scottsdale, Arizona. The commit is the fourth for Miller’s 2019 class, which is now ranked second in the country, per 247Sports.
• However, Miller can’t get everyone. Five-star forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl cut UA from his list on Thursday. Robinson-Earl officially visited Arizona the weekend of Oct. 12 for the Red-Blue game.
• The Brandon Williams-Justin Coleman backcourt is apparently “unfair.”
• We will get to see it in action Tuesday when Arizona hosts an exhibition against Western New Mexico. The Wildcats are “hungry” to play against someone other than themselves.
