How Arizona’s commits performed in Week 9

Let’s take a look at how the future Wildcats did last weekend

Grant Gunnell, QB, St. Pius X

Result: Home win against Concordia Lutheran, 34-14

School Record: 7-1

Game Stats: 21 for 31, 487 yds, 5 TD, 2 INT; 4 car, 21 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 205 for 301, 3221 yds, 37 TD, 4 INT; 68 car, 433 yds, 7 TD

Game Notes: The big story of the night was Gunnell breaking the Texas high school career passing yards record, finishing the game with 14,577 yards. That is an impressive feat considering the countless talented QBs to come out of the Lone Star State.

When it comes to the game, Gunnell continued his normal, high level of production. He did have two interceptions, though, which has been a rarity for Gunnell this season. Below is a clip of one of his TD passes on a pass to the receiver on the flat.

Next Game: vs. Antonian Prep, Nov. 2

Kwabena Watson, DE/OLB, Edison

Result: Neutral-site victory against Sanger, 43-21

School Record: 5-4

Game Stats: 1 tackle and a catch on fake field goal (Unconfirmed, based on clips)

Season Stats: Unknown tackles, 17.0 TFL, 10.0 sacks (confirmed through interview)

Game Notes: Watson’s clips don’t show many things stat-wise but I still really like what he brings to the table. He showed a nifty spin move to get around a blocker to rush the punter. That was something I haven’t seen much from him before, but I like it. He was also on the receiving end of a fake field goal scoring play.

Next Game: vs. Bullard, Oct. 26

Jaxen Turner, S, Rancho Verde

Result: Home victory against Paloma Valley, 45-14

School Record: 9-0

Game Stats: 4 rec, 125 yds, 1 TD; 1 car, 18 yds, 1 TD (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Season Stats: 13 tackles, 1 INT, 2 PBU; 4 rec, 91 yds; 9 car, 72 yds, 3 TD (Incomplete stats)

Game Notes: Arizona’s newest commit had himself a heck of a game offensively. He is able to make all kinds of would-be tacklers miss and look foolish with his athleticism. Now take that athleticism and move it over to defense and you can imagine the type of player he will be in college.

Next Game: at Heritage, Oct. 26

Maurice Gaines Jr., CB, St. Thomas More

Result: Neutral loss to St. Frances Academy, 55-0

School Record: 3-2

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 3 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PBU (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: Gaines didn’t have much film from the game on Saturday with only two clips. Gaines looked to have shut his receiver down but overall STM had an abysmal game.

Next Game: vs. Canada Prep Football Academy, Oct. 27

Jalen Johnson, WR, Eleanor Roosevelt

Result: Home loss to Norco, 51-7

School Record: 5-4

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 28 rec, 527 yds, 4 TD (Incomplete stats)

Game Notes: There isn’t any film of, nor stats for Johnson, during the game. I do know that a nice TD catch by Johnson was called back due to a penalty. The game did not go the way the Mustangs wanted, losing 51-7 to Norco.

Next Game: at Centennial, Oct. 25

Kane Bradford, DT, Skyline

Result: Away victory against Richardson, 71-33

School Record: 4-2

Game Stats: 1 tackle and 1.0 TFL (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Season Stats: 10 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 1.0 sack (Unconfirmed, based off clips)

Game Notes: There wasn’t much film on Bradford, but the one play (two angles) continue to show how much his game has grown this offseason. He is able to use his power, speed and hands in unison to shed a block and bring the ball carrier down for a loss.

Next Game: at Molina, Oct. 26

Chris Roland, DB, William Knight

Result: Away loss to Highland, 22-20

School Record: 7-2

Game Stats: 11 tackles; 7 rec, 130 yds, 0 TD

Season Stats: 44 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 5 INT, 2 PBU, 1 forced fumble; 55 rec, 981 yds, 10 TD

Game Notes: Roland and the Hawks were handed only their second loss of the season in a close game. Roland made his normal athletic plays offensively. Defensively, he showed that he is quite effective playing the run and doing a great job wrapping up and making the tackle. His stats prove that concept, as he finished with double digit tackles on the night.

Next game: vs. Palmdale, Oct. 26

Derrion Clark, LB, South Oak Cliff

Result: Home victory against Spruce, 66-0

School Record: 6-1

Game Stats: 1 tackle (Unconfirmed, based on clips)

Season Stats: 40 tackles, 10.0 TFL, 1.0 sack (Incomplete, not all games have been updated)

Game Notes: There were no clips of Clark but based on stats and the score, it appears that he and SOC had no problems. The play below kind of shows how Clark can perform dropping back in zone. He is able to read and quickly react to the play, smashing the receiver with a teammate for a short gain.

Updated Senior Highlights:

Next Game: at Seagoville, Oct, 25

Michael Wiley, RB, Strake Jesuit

Result: Home loss to Pearland, 57-42

School Record: 6-1

Game Stats: 9-yard TD run (Based on clips)

Season Stats: 100 car, 734 yds, 9 TD; 11 rec, 158 yds, 0 TD (Incomplete stats)

Game Notes: Strake Jesuit was handed its first loss of the season. I wasn’t able to find any stats but below is a clip of Wiley scoring from nine yards out on a very decisive run.

Next Game: at Brazoswood, Oct. 26

Jordan Morgan, OT, Marana

Result: Home victory against Sunnyside, 47-17

School Record: 6-3

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Marana bounced back nicely from its loss to Cienega with a convincing win against Sunnyside. Based on footage I saw from the game, it appears that Morgan had a little bit of a rough game. He was inconsistent and seemed to have a little trouble with the speed off the edge that Sunnyside had. That doesn’t mean he didn’t do his job, because even though he was having a little bit of trouble, he was able to get in the way long enough for the QB to make his throws.

Next Game: at Nogales, Oct. 26

Eddie Siaumau, OLB/DE, Leone

Result: N/A

School Record: 2-3

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Siaumau and Leone had a bye week.

Next Game: N/A

Kyle Ostendorp, P, Desert Vista

Result: Away victory against Corona del Sol, 56-15

School Record: 8-1

Game Stats: Unknown

Season Stats: 25 punts, 1071 yds, 42.8 avg, 62 yd long, 13 Inside the 20 (Note: stats only include 8 of 9 games)

Game Notes: Desert Vista continued its dominating performance this season as the Thunder defeated CDS easily. There were no stats for Ostendorp for this game, but his stats from the previous two games were updated. Ostendorp is averaging almost 43 yards per punt, which is the range you want to see from your punter.

Next Game: vs. Queen Creek, Oct. 26

Ahina Aitogi, OL, Fort Scott CC

Result: Home loss to Butler, 35-14

School Record: 2-5

Game Stats: N/A

Season Stats: N/A

Game Notes: Fort Scott has had a down year this season. Aitogi and the offensive line allowed the Greyhounds to rush for only 108 yards with no scores. However, they did allow 11 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Aitogi did pretty well overall on his side of the line. He does need a little work on his lateral speed, he is still effective at engaging his man and keeping him engaged. He did miss a couple of blocks but that is something that is easily fixable.

Butler:

Season Stats:

Next Game: at Iowa Western CC, Oct. 27
