Arizona QB Khalil Tate leaves Utah game with ankle injury

This has been a long time coming

Ever since the second game of the year, Arizona Wildcats quarterback Khalil Tate has been dealing with an ankle injury.

It’s clearly hindered his performance, and on Friday night against the Utah Utes, it became too much to leave him in the game.

After a sack in the first quarter, Tate immediately grabbed at the ankle while on the ground. After getting up he had a severe limp, and on the ensuing third down play, could barely move in the pocket.

Kevin Sumlin replaced Tate with true freshman Jamarye Joiner, who played three snaps in the previous game vs. Cal. That drive was pre-planned to prepare the Cienega HS grad for moments like this.

Tate entered the year as a Heisman candidate, but the ankle injury combined with a new offensive philosophy have wiped away those hopes and dreams. Now Arizona looks to simply become bowl eligible with either a hindered Tate or an inexperienced quarterback at the helm.
