Arizona volleyball moves up in the eyes of AVCA pollsters

After entering the “others receiving votes” category last week, the Wildcats gained more votes this week.

After a down year last season, it was understandable that the AVCA voters left Arizona off the preseason poll. Even with so many returners, it was difficult to know how the Wildcats would do this year.

After a 6-0 start paced by Kendra Dahlke’s conference-leading 5.76 kills and 6.0 points per set, some of those doubts are beginning to fade.

The Wildcats first appeared in the “others receiving votes” category after week one, when they swept the Hornet Invitational. Picking up 10 points in the August 27 poll placed them at the equivalent of No. 36 in the nation.

More voters got on board this week after the team swept the Cactus Classic in three straight-set victories. The Wildcats received 28 points in the poll, placing them at No. 29.

Arizona joined nine of their fellow Pac-12 members who picked up enough votes to appear in either the main poll or the “others receiving votes” category. They surpassed Oregon State as the top conference team outside the main part of the poll.

The eight teams inside the Top 25 are Stanford (4), UCLA (9), USC (10), Washington (12), Oregon (18), Utah (21), Washington State (23), and Colorado (24).
