Recruiting update: On Brandon Williams and Tevian Jones

Things aren’t looking good for the Wildcats right now

Brandon Williams has been a hot commodity since he decommitted from the Arizona Wildcats on March 2 following the release of ESPN’s Sean Miller wiretap report.

The high-four-star point guard has received interested from Oregon, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, UCLA, Ohio State, Connecticut, and Kentucky, he told 247Sports.

However, Williams has said that Arizona is still in consideration, and UA head coach Sean Miller visited Williams at Crespi High School on March 6.

“I may end up committing back there but will time will tell,” Williams told Evan Daniels of 247Sports. “Coach Miller and his staff have really opened my eyes about things that I didn’t know before I decommitted. They went into all kinds of detail and our talks have been really reassuring.”

Williams, coming off knee surgery, has been tearing it up this season, averaging 24.7 points per game, despite being on a minutes limit most of the season.

He is the No. 31 player in the 2018 class, per composite rankings.

If Williams were to re-up with Arizona, he would have a major role with the Wildcats from day one as a freshman. Arizona is set to lose its entire starting five and its only returning point guard is soon-to-be sophomore Alex Barcello, who has not made much of an impact in Tucson so far.

But it’s understandable why someone would be hesitant to commit to Arizona right now, given the program’s involvement in the federal investigation into college basketball.

The Wildcats have to hope that doesn’t scare off Williams altogether.

Tevian Jones plans to visit four schools; Arizona isn’t one of them

Arizona offered four-star guard Tevian Jones in early February and appeared to be gaining some traction in his recruitment before the ESPN wiretap report, but it appears that is no longer the case.

Jones, an Arizona native who attends Culver City HS in California, has visited Illinois and plans to visit Xavier, Mississippi State, and probably Cal too, per 247Sports.

If Jones is no longer an option for Arizona, the only other 2018 recruit the UA has been linked to consistently (other than Williams) is four-star guard Devonaire Doutrive, a top-100 prospect from Van Nuys, California, whose recruitment has been pretty quiet.

Obviously that is extremely concerning since Arizona is set to graduate four seniors and lose Deandre Ayton, Allonzo Trier, and Rawle Alkins at the end of the season.

It’s looking more and more likely that Arizona will have to pilfer the transfer market and/or 2018-19 will be a difficult season for the program.
