Arizona baseball sweeps Opening Day doubleheader vs. Bryant
The Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs, 9-1
Arizona baseball swept an opening day doubleheader over Bryant on Saturday to get its season started in the right direction.
The Wildcats’ season opener was originally scheduled for Friday night, but a rain storm postponed the game until Saturday afternoon.
Arizona came out strong with a 4-0 win behind seven shutout innings from ace Cody Deason in game on.
Bryant kept Arizona’s lineup in check for most the afternoon – Bryant actually outhit the Wildcats 5-4 – until sophomore Cameron Cannon broke through with an RBI single in the fifth.
Arizona added three insurance runs in the eighth inning off a Cal Stevenson RBI single and a two-run single from Alfonso Rivas.
Tylor Megill earned the save, striking out three batters across 1.1 innings pitched.
The second game of the day resulted in a 5-1 Arizona win.
Michael Flynn went 5.1 innings to earn the win.
Arizona struck for three runs in the third inning. Stevenson got things going with an RBI bunt single. Mitchell Morimoto added the second run on an RBI single.
With two down, Morimoto on first, and Rivas at the plate, Bryant’s pitcher threw a wild pitch which allowed Morimoto to advance to second, then a throwing error by the Bryant centerfield let Morimoto round third, reach home and score for the team’s third run.
Arizona added runs in the sixth and seventh innings off sacrifice flies by Cesar Salazar and Morimoto, respectively.
Bryant’s lone run of the day came on a solo homerun in the sixth inning off Arizona reliever Jason Seever.
Rob Medel closed the game for Arizona with a scoreless 1.2 IP.
The Wildcats will look to sweep the series Sunday when the two teams go at it for a noon opening pitch.
