Deandre Ayton, Allonzo Trier are top 3 in offensive efficiency among power-conference players

Two of the top three scorers from power conferences reside in Tucson

Before the season even started, Arizona Wildcats stars Allonzo Trier and Deandre Ayton were named one of the top duos in college basketball.

That has turned out to be an accurate projection.

Ayton and Trier are No. 2 and No. 3 in offensive efficiency respectively among all players from power conferences (minimum 16 possessions per game), according to analytics site Synergy Sports Tech.

Both Ayton and Trier are averaging 1.16 points per possession. The only player from a power conference posting a better mark is Duke’s Marvin Bagley III who is averaging 1.18 points per 100 possessions.

The only other power-conference school with two players in the top 10 in offensive efficiency (let alone the top three) is Marquette.

Trier is averaging 21.3 points per game, while shooting 54.2 percent from the field, 42.5 percent from 3, and 83.3 percent from the line.

Ayton is averaging 19.7 points and 11.9 rebounds per contest, while shooting 62 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from 3, and 71 percent from the charity stripe.

Thanks to those two, Arizona’s offense currently ranks sixth in the nation in efficiency per KenPom.

Arizona’s biggest problem this season is on defense where it ranks just 60th in college basketball in defensive efficiency.

But the Wildcats can clearly score with the best and if they start playing defense at a higher level — which they are starting to do — the sky truly is their limit this season.
