Arizona has not offered head coaching job to anyone, is still interviewing candidates, per report

No one knows anything it seems

It seems like no one has a clue what’s happening in the Arizona Wildcats’ football coaching search.

On Friday, the Arizona Daily Star reported that Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo was offered the job.

That report surfaced soon after ESPN had reported that Niumatalolo was a “strong candidate” and FootballScoop saying that negotiations were ongoing.

That progression makes sense, right?

Well, once the Daily Star’s report came to light, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg shot it down by tweeting this:

“Arizona has not offered its head-coaching position to any candidates, nor have any negotiations started, according to a source close to the search process. Candidate interviews are still taking place. These things can move quickly but nothing is done, I’m told.”

Rittenberg then added:

“From what sources have told me, Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo, Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin and former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin all remain in the mix, along with current Arizona DC Marcel Yates, who understandably has a lot of support within the program.”

Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated also tweeted that Yates is a finalist, and that he expects a hire to be made in the next 48 hours.

So basically we’re back to square one.
