Ex-Wildcat Reggie Gilbert promoted to Packers’ active roster

The Arizona product will have a chance to make his NFL debut

The Green Bay Packers have been eliminated from playoff contention and recently placed star quarterback Aaron Rodgers on season-ending injured reserve, as they shift their focus toward next season.

A beneficiary of that approach is former Arizona Wildcat Reggie Gilbert who was promoted to the active roster on Friday.

The 24-year-old linebacker has been on the Packers’ practice squad for nearly two full seasons, but has yet to make his NFL debut which could now happen in the final two weeks of the regular season.

This move will earn Gilbert a sizable pay raise. Practice squad players earn a minimum of $7,200 per week, while a minimum-salaried active NFL player with one year of experience (like Gilbert) earns roughly $32,000 per game week, according to this chart.

Gilbert was signed by Green Bay in May of 2016 after going undrafted out of Arizona and then was re-signed this past January.

The Laveen, Ariz. native appeared in 57 career games at Arizona starting 47. Gilbert finished with 143 tackles, 27 tackles for a loss, 14 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries during his time in Tucson.

He was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention as a senior.

Gilbert and the Packers take on the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. MST. The game will be broadcast by NBC.
