Arizona football recruiting SitRep: Wildcats add 12th 2018 commit

Arizona lands much-needed size and depth at receiver next year with the addition of Tre Adams

The Arizona Wildcats had quite a successful week. They traveled to Boulder and came away with a 45-42 win over the Colorado Buffaloes, and sophomore quarterback Khalil Tate broke the FBS quarterback single-game rushing record with 327 yards.

On the recruiting side of things, they added a much-needed commit to the 2018 class.

How UA’s 2018 commits performed

David Watson, OT/DT

2017 Stats: 23 tackles, 5.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks, 1 PBU, 1 forced fumble

Amphitheater Panthers: 1-6

Good news for Amphi, they won their first game of the season on Friday with a 24-13 win over Douglas. Watson finished the game with three tackles defensively.

Armani Adams, S

2017 Stats: 28 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1 PBU

Lakewood Spartans: 5-1

The Panthers pulled out a 24-14 victory over Pinellas Park to improve to 5-1 on the season. I was unable to find any stats or clips of Adams from the game.

Jhevon Hill, DB

2017 Stats: 18 tackles, 2 INT, 3 PBU

Cajon Cowboys: 5-1

Hill and his Cajon squad secured a 46-3 beatdown of Eisenhower on Friday. Hill showed off good instincts and physicality in the Cowboys’ win. He also had a 91-yard kickoff return of a touchdown. His game highlights can be found below.

Issaiah Johnson, LB

2017 Stats: Unknown

Los Alamitos Griffins: 3-3

Los Al had an easy victory against Newport Harbor, 49-0, improving the Griffins to 3-3 on the year. I couldn’t find any stats or clips of Johnson during the game, but I found his mid-season highlights and tape of him last week against Tesoro.

Watching this reaffirms my high opinion of him as a linebacker. He has a pretty nifty spin move at about 2:15 during his mid-season tape (it’s actually the first play in his Tesoro tape). Enjoy!

Jaiden Dockery, S

2017 Stats: Unkonwn

Lancaster Tigers: 2-3

Dockery wasn’t in action this past weekend as his Tigers had their bye week.

Mykee Irving, DT

2017 Stats: 10 tackles

Calabasas Coyotes: 6-0

The Yotes continue to have a perfect season, finishing off Westlake Friday 54-14. I was unable to find any clips or stats of UA’s lone defensive line commit.

Jamarye Joiner, QB

2017 Stats: 67-for-122, 1,176 yds, 15 TD, 4 INT; 67 car, 491 yds, 12 TD

Cienega Bobcats: 7-0

The Bobcats continued their perfect season as well, beating Sahuaro 49-28. Joiner was back up to his usual production, going 8-for-17 for 259 yards, two scores, and a pick through the air. On the ground he carried the ball 11 times for 113 yards and a touchdown. One thing that stood out was Joiner’s ability to turn nothing into something.

Darrius Smith, RB

2017 Stats: Unknown

Dawson Eagles: 3-1

Smith and his Eagle squad squeaked out a 14-13 victory over George Ranch Friday night. I was unable to find any stats or clips of the shifty running back commit.

Jake Peters, TE

2017 Stats: 5 rec, 55 yds, 0 TD

Santa Margarita Catholic Eagles: 4-2

The SAC Eagles had a hard go of it Friday as they hosted SoCal powerhouse Mater Dei. The Monarchs walked away with a 70-35 victory over the Eagles. Peters came away with a catch for 14 yards. A couple of things I really like about his game is he is a physical run-blocker and has good hands.

McKenzie Barnes, CB

2017 Stats: 17 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 13 PBU

Edison Tigers: 3-3

The Tigers pulled even this past Friday as their latest win came over Madera, 43-14. Based on his highlights, Barnes had a least a tackle and a deflected pass. And he had a textbook perfect block along the outside to spring his running back when he was on offense.

New commitment

Tre Adams, WR

2017 Stats: 19 rec, 335 yds, 6 TD

Wakeland Wolverines: 4-1

Now we get to the new guy on the block. Tre Adams became the 12th member of Arizona’s 2018 class when he gave the ‘Cats his pledge Wednesday. The wide receiver adds much-needed size on the outside, and has a chance to make an immediate impact.

Adams and his Wakeland team received their first loss of the season at the hands of Reedy, 35-28. I wasn’t able to find any stats or clips of Adams during the game but I found his mid-season highlights, which can be found below.

Recruiting notes

• It is around that time of year when players start getting selected and presented with jerseys to All-American games/bowls and the like. Three Arizona targets recently received their jerseys for their respective bowls.
• We’ll start with 4-star defensive tackle target Tyler Manoa from St. Francis High School (Mountain View, CA). He received his invite and jersey to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He has a top four of Arizona, UCLA, Utah, and California. He has already visited Cal and UCLA and is looking at a visit to Tucson in the near future. The game is on NBC on Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. Tucson time.
• Another big Arizona target that is going to the Army All-American game is 3-star offensive guard Chris Murray from Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, CA). Murray has visited Utah already and still likes the Wildcats. It will be interesting to see if Arizona can get him on campus for a visit since they have been recruiting him pretty hard ever since they offered back in the spring.
• We’ll move on to 3-star offensive tackle Joey Ramos from Glendale-Deer Valley. Ramos received his jersey for the Blue-Grey Football All-American Game. One the recruiting front, he has been to UA’s campus multiple times and continues to be a major in-state target for the ‘Cats. Right now their biggest competition is Arizona State and Iowa State.
• Finally, we get to 3-star safety Kenny Churchwell from Phoenix-Mountain Pointe. He, too, received his jersey for the Blue-Grey All-American game. Recruiting-wise, Churchwell has honestly been to Tucson and the UA so many times I’ve lost count. He visited during the Houston game and it was an important one for him. His former lead recruiter at UA was Charlie Ragle before he left for Cal. After that, Churchwell didn’t have many connections with the new staff. That changed after the visit, and now the ‘Cats are in a great spot with him.
