Arizona Wildcats gymnastics coach Tabitha Yim leaves for Stanford
It’s a homecoming for Yim
Arizona Wildcats gymnastics coach Tabitha Yim has been hired to be Stanford’s new head coach, it was announced Wednesday.
It’s a homecoming for Yim, who was a gymnast at Stanford from 2005-08 and an assistant coach there from 2010-15.
Yim is replacing long-time coach Kristen Smyth who retired on Aug. 11.
"I had an incredible scholar-athlete experience at Stanford shaped by the coaches, faculty, and staff who were committed to my development as a student, athlete and person,” Yim said in a statement. “I will forever remain thankful for the support of John Court, David McCreary and the Arizona staff, and I am grateful to Bernard and the Stanford family for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading this program towards continued success."
Yim, 31, was hired by Arizona in 2015, and the Wildcats finished in the top 25 in each of her two seasons with the program.
Yim’s replacement will be Dave Heeke’s second hire since becoming Arizona’s athletic director. Heeke’s first hire was bringing in Augie Busch, a UA alum, to be the Wildcats’ new head swimming and diving coach.
The gymnastics season typically begins in early January, so expect Arizona to find a new coach relatively soon.
