Arizona vs. ASU baseball recap: Wildcats clinch season series against Sun Devils with 3-1 Friday night victory

A lot of fun things clinched for ASU in this one

The Arizona Wildcats took out the Arizona State Sun Devils 3-1 on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, clinching the weekend and season series between the two teams.

The loss also guarantees that ASU will finish the year with a losing record for just the second time in school history.

Arizona can thank Cameron Ming for this one, who hurled his second complete game of the season, both of which have come in the last three weeks.

Ming scattered six hits and two walks over his nine innings of work, using 109 total pitches to navigate his way through the Sun Devil lineup. He only faced more than four batters in an inning twice, working out of trouble in both the second and third innings.

Much like Thursday’s game, Arizona’s bats started to find the ball in the fourth inning.

Ryan Haug doubled and Cory Voss singled to start the inning, putting runners on the corners for Nick Quintana.

The freshman third baseman bounced into a double play, but it was still good enough to put the Wildcats up 1-0.

And again, like Thursday, Arizona put it away in the 7th.

Louis Boyd and Cal Stevenson started the frame with singles, once again putting runners on the corners.

ASU took out starting pitcher Eli Lingos at this point, opting for Ryan Hingst out of the bullpen.

Jared Oliva then hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Boyd.

Later in the inning, another fielder’s choice with the out being at second resulted in the third Wildcat run, this time off the bat of JJ Matijevic. So Arizona won this game without even recording an RBI hit.

These two teams conclude the three-game series on Saturday night at 7 PM PT. It will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks, and it’s likely that Cody Deason will get the start for U of A.
