Arizona basketball: Allonzo Trier injury update
The coaching staff is hopeful Trier will be back in two weeks
Even though the Arizona Wildcats were just beaten by the California Golden Bears on Saturday, the Wildcats can expect better things ahead. For one, seven of their next 11 games are at McKale Center, where they have won 49 straight games, and secondly, Allonzo Trier could be back soon.
Trier, who is averaging a team-high 14.8 points per game, broke a bone in his shooting hand two weeks ago in the quadruple overtime loss to the USC Trojans. The timetable given for his return was four-to-six weeks, and so far his recovery is going well.
"His pain is subsiding, which is a good sign, and they tell me that means healing is taking place," Sean Miller said at his weekly press conference. "He continues to have more flexibility and mobility in his hand. At one point it was kind of stationary. Now he's able to move it, he's able to shoot a little bit, pass a little bit."
Miller -- like all Arizona fans -- is anxious to get Trier back. Not only was he the team's leading-scorer, but he was improving each and every game. Trier had scored 20 or more points in four of his last five games.
"I want him to be out there because, like you all know, he was on the rise playing his best basketball of his career here at Arizona." Miller said
Of course, the hope is that he can return sooner rather than later, but it's still unclear exactly when he'll be back on the court.
"We don't have a crystal ball," Miller said. "He has two weeks behind him, this coming Saturday it'll be three. And I think we talked about four to six, hopefully it'll be closer to four than six."
One thing is for sure, Trier won't be hurried to return.
"We can't control that. We don't want to rush him back," Miller said. "We want to make sure he's full go so that when he comes back, he's not only ready to go, but he's not in any further risk to have another setback."
